About Weardale
Wildlife in Weardale includes an important population of Black Grouse, along with the more usual upland birds. Sea-trout and salmon run the River Wear while Adders (snakes) are sometimes encountered on the moors.
Westgate's name originates from the time when the Bishop of Durham created a hunting park in Weardale and this was its west gate. Eastgate marks its eastern entrance.
Slitt Wood is an ancient Woodland with a series of attractive waterfalls and over 100 varieties of wild flower in the Spring and Summer.

If you're looking for different day out, we recommend 'Killhope Lead Mining Museum'. The museum is situated in the Cowshill area of Weardale and is 450 metres above sea level with breath taking scenery. Some of the areas within the museum are based outdoors - we would recommend trying to get a sunny day to visit. The museum is open from 11.00am-5.00pm with the cafe attached open from 10.30am!

Perfect day to learn about the mining history of Weardale!
